Military camp Military camp ... inside the city walls, as it would have looked in the 1700s.

Ruins of Roman castrum gate Gate of the Roman Castrum The romans build a "castrum" - a fortified military camp, which conformed to their very simple design: a simple square with walls around and gates on each of the four sides. Two main roads crossed the castrum, one north to south, the other east to west. These are the ruins of one of the gates. The Roman castrum was perhaps the second city built on this location, the first being built by Dacians. More cities and fortifications were to follow through the centuries.

Old building Old building ... inside city walls. Even the buildings were heavely fortified, as to resist a possible bombardment.

Secret tunnel Tunnel There were multiple secret tunnels inside and between walls. The idea was to give defenders maximum mobility and refuge in case of an attack.

Chamber Inside chamber This is a very large chamber, deep under the city walls. It was perhaps one of the main places where people could meet safely during a siege.

Walls and moats Walls and moats The city had three concentric systems of walls, with moats between them. It was one of the most advanced designs, as after that the power of modern artilery made such fortifications quite obsolete. The walls have a shape that creates "killing zones" where the attackers are hit with fires from multiple directions.

Cannons Cannons The secret tunnels allowed defenders to quickly appear with their cannons in the most unexpected places by the attackers.

A soldier in 1700s uniform The wall behind belonged to the citadel which preceded the last one built in 1700s. It is perhaps more then 500 years old.

There were also beautiful ladies in the 1700s ... she also served some incredible good sausages and beer!
